Foodbank WA shelves stripped bare

Foodbank WA shelves have been stripped bare as demand for emergency food assistance soars.

Last month, Foodbank WA distributed 464,000 meals to registered charities that provide emergency food assistance to people in Perth, Albany, Bunbury, Geraldton, Kalgoorlie and Peel.

This is a staggering increase on the year prior, and essential supplies are now at an all-time low.

Greg Hebble, CEO, Foodbank WA said food donations are encouraged all year around, however financial donations are now a priority if they have any chance of meeting the growing demand.

“We have recently experienced an increased demand for key staple items, including long-life products such as UHT milk, pasta, rice and canned products which are in short supply.”

“Sourcing enough food remains a challenge for us and while we are continuing to work with our food and grocery industry partners, donations have slowed. We really need funds to purchase food more than ever.”

Of the 3.3 million kilograms of food distributed by Foodbank WA last financial year, 88% of the food was donated by the food and grocery industry and the public.

Foodbank WA is also seeking financial support from the state government and local businesses to fund the gap and better meet the demand for emergency food assistance statewide.

1 in 5 West Australians have experienced food insecurity in the past 12 months and have gone without a meal. Foodbank WA charity partners report that at least 30% more food is needed to meet total demand.

“West Australians are especially generous in times of crisis, so we are asking people to please dig deep to help those who are most vulnerable in our community,” said Mr Hebble.
