Fighting Hunger in South & Central Australia

Foodbank is by far, the largest hunger relief organisation in South & Central Australia.

Our mission is to end hunger. Last year alone, Foodbank South & Central Australia provided enough food for more than 7.2 million meals.

Foodbank South Australia is a non-denominational community supported, non-profit organisation which relies on the support of a large network of dedicated people who have a commitment to fulfilling the vision of a South & Central Australia without hunger.

Established in South Australia in 2000, Foodbank South Australia’s core concept remains simple – to feed those in need by redistributing surplus food.

Fighting hunger in the Northern Territory

Approximately 9 years ago Baptist Care sent a delegation to the Northern Territory to see what gaps existed in local services and to see if any of these gaps could be filled. Two things that were apparent was food insecurity as well as a shortage of housing. Housing was always going to be a difficult and expensive proposition however taking action to address food insecurity was seen to be within reach.  A small warehouse was set up in Winnellie and a food rescue program was started after liaising with local supermarkets.

Baptist Care then joined forces with Foodbank, giving people in the Northern Territory access to a share of the food  that Foodbank sources across Australia.
