Hampers Head to Mullewa

The one hundred kilometres separating Mullewa from Geraldton, is just an inconvenience for most, but for dozens of vulnerable families it means the difference between putting food on the family table and going without.

Most remote regional communities have very limited food shopping options. The price of a trolley of basic groceries can be several times that of a major regional centre; a problem made worse through pandemic lockdowns and city panic buying.

While many in Mullewa make the hour-long road trip to Geraldton for their weekly food shopping, it is not an option for the most vulnerable in the community. Unemployment and lack of transport have left too many wondering where their next meal will come from.

For thirty of these families, help has arrived, thanks to rail freight company Aurizon giving its support to a particularly precious cargo. A cash grant from Aurizon Community Fund supported our Geraldton branch in providing 390 emergency food relief hampers over a six month period.

Hunger stories from remote WA are often the last to be heard, but we know the need is great wherever distance and poverty collide. At Foodbank WA, our aim is to make hunger history in every corner of the state – we can get there, with the support of generous organisations.
